Dr Bothman graduated in medicine from the University of Sydney in 1973 and completed his training in general pathology in 1981, after spending twelve months in general practice.  John commenced pathology registrar training at ICPMR, Westmead Hospital in 1976.

Dr Bothman was Chairman of the Division of Investigative Medicine at the Launceston General Hospital, Tasmania and Director of Tamar Pathology Launceston.  He is a member of the International Academy of Cytology, the International Academy of Pathology and the Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists.  Dr Bothman has been an RCPA examiner in Anatomical Pathology for several years and in 2005 was appointed Chief Examiner in General and Clinical Pathology.

Dr Bothman's areas of special interest include; fine needle aspiration cytology, histopathology (with special interest in gastrointestinal pathology and dermatopathology) and general clinical pathology.  He joined the Pathologists Department at Southern.IML Pathology in 1991.
