Grant graduated in medicine and computer science from the University of Melbourne in 1977. He was admitted to the fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 1986 as a general pathologist after training at Geelong Hospital and the Prince of Wales and St Vincent's in Sydney.
After gaining his fellowship Grant worked in Victoria in both private and public sectors and in forensic pathology.
In 1993 he moved to Hong Kong and worked as a clinical microbiologist and in late 1993 he was appointed the Director of Pathology at Townsville General Hospital. He moved to Southern.IML Pathology in January 2001. Grant's special interests include anatomical and forensic pathology, infectious pathology, mircobiology, and pathology informatics.
